Silly Slime

While at a conference in Kananaskis a few weeks ago the boys attempted to make slime during an activity at the Lodge.  It didn't work and I promised them that we would try it at home.  Our Family Day activity at the house consisted of slime, in 3 colors.  It was a hit and super easy.

If you notice all the little pieces of blue slime all over, they covered my kitchen for the next 3 days!

Recipe:  dissolve 1 tsp of Borax in 1 cup warm water

In another container mix 1:1 white glue and water and whatever color you want

Pour the glue mixture into the Borax mixture and it will immediately start to polymerize.

Remove any excess water.  Play.  Store in sealable container (we use zip-locs) in fridge.

Nathan's First Trip to the ER

The boys went to look at 'a project' for daddy.  They stopped at the park to play and Nathan had a little fight with the teeter totter...

The results... 2 stitches in his eyebrow.  He did so well.  He said "Owwwieee!! really loudly a few times but he laid there and let them put in the freezing and stitches.  After they were in the nurses gave him a stuffed dog that holds a blanket.  It took him a minute to smile but the dog and blanket became the focal points as we headed home.  Jay even said Nathan could sleep with him if he brought his dog and blanket.  On the way home I asked how he was doing, "It hurted!" was his only comment.

It's official... I have proof... Nathan and Jay can share a bed and covers!  Nathan woke up during the night and went in to his brother's room.  Although Jay initially told him to get out, this morning when I went to wake Carson (top bunk) for school, Nathan and Jay were tucked in and sleeping.  Not the best photo but I snapped it with the iPhone for proof!

For FHE tonight we made Ninjabread men.  We found the cookie cutters this weekend in Calgary.  The noys were excited to make them so I actually mixed the up while Carson was still at school and then the boys helped cut them out and we decorated them.  I can't find the cord to upload the photos from my good camera, so all I have are the one from my iPhone.  When I find the cord I will post the new pictures on here.
To continue with the story of our day, I am sure the boys will need therapy when they are older.  Halfway through the cookie decorating I got a call for Medical Examiner and needed to go to the apartment to look at the body and decide whether or not we needed to do an autopsy.  Clarke was working so the boys stayed in the van outside.  I can't imagine the stories they tell their teachers when they go to school!

Milk for friends...

Lady - the Milk Dog?

At lunch today while rubbing our dog Lady's belly, Nathan asked where it was that she gave milk to her friends.  I looked at him a little puzzled and he said that Lady used to give milk to her friends and he wanted to know where they drank from!  He knows that babies drink milk from their mothers but for some reason he thinks Lady shares milk with friends!  I explained that Lady used to make milk for her puppies.  Mommies don't share their milk with their friends, at least not the Mommies I know!  (Now, just to clarify, I once tried to donate milk to a milk bank, but that MUCH different that sharing milk with my friends as Nathan was meaning!)

The Brother Store...

I was at Costco with Nathan and he saw a gentleman there with 4 boys, a 6 year old, a soon to be 4 year old and twin 2 year olds.  He commented on the number of brothers that they had.  I said, "Yes, they have one more brother than you do."  He then proceeded to tell me he wanted another brother.  I tried to explain that he wouldn't be having any more brothers.  His response was that we could go to the brother store and buy one.  I told him that there wasn't a store to buy brothers.  He insisted that there was.  He was going to run there and use his allowance to buy a new brother.  If only it were that simple!

Snowmobile Holiday in Montana

We booked a condo and went on a road trip to Seeley Lake, Montana.  Originally we booked it as a trip to just get away from the chaos over the holidays.  In the end it became a search for snow as this was a very brown Christmas in most of Alberta.  The weather in Medicine Hat while we were gone was crazy with some daily temperatures of 16 degrees Celsius.  We found this great little town that is a snowmobile haven and although the locals kept telling us how little snow they had, there were amazing groomed trails all around with miles and hours of entertainment.  We were there over New Year's and being the party people that we are, we were all in bed by 9:30 on New Year's Eve!

 We were of course completely shocked that we had to drive 7 hours south of our Canadian home to find snow!  You can see by the some of the pictures though that it was light jacket weather and there were perfect conditions for sledding.  We only have one trail sled so we took turns taking the boys up into the hills on the various trails on most days.  We rented another trail sled on our last full day there and went on a 26 mile adventure on the trails.  We got a little lost but managed to find our way back.  Jay only had one major melt down, Clarke saw the allusive "kitty" in the mountains, and I managed to not tip my sled!  It was a good day!  In the middle of the trip we put together the GT racer and the boys loved riding it behind the sled at the trail head and telling Daddy each time to go even faster.  Nathan looked so small as they were pulling away but the only one who crashed off the racer with any regularity was Daddy.  Carson did take one flying leap off over a jump at the end but everyone was safe and happy.

Clarke had to pick Nathan up once or twice but always right at the end, within 10 feet of our truck.

Stinky, poised for the take off.  He always had his toque half covering his eyes and whenever I tried to fix it he would get mad.  The boys also managed to lose all their mitts and although I offered them mine they just wanted to 'race'.

Although there was an outhouse 50 feet away, I looked over to find Nathan watering the snow.  I couldn't get to the camera fast enough to get a picture other than this with him pulling up his pants.  You can tell that this was another warm day as none of the boys were wearing coats.

Our sled is on the left, Clarke is on the rental.  We didn't get any pictures up in the hills this day as it was snowing for much of our ride and you couldn't see much of anything except snow and fog.  Carson was also reluctant to stop for long as he was worried the "Mountain Cat" would get us.  We saw lots of tracks but Clarke was the only one who saw wildlife other than squirrels and deer.

Crazy people were out fishing on Salmon Lake as well as Seeley Lake.  There were places where the water was still open!  We had really nice, above freezing, weather the whole time we were there and there were tons of people out on the lakes.

Hipstamatic!

I found an app called Hipstamatic that takes old style photos on my iPhone.  The down side it that the pictures are often not centered, but I do like the effects of them.  This is Carson showing off how big his mouth is.

While in Seeley, we checked out the town one afternoon.  They have an old fashioned malt shop where the boys wanted ice cream and Clarke and I shared a Huckleberry milk shake.  Huckleberries are a local treat and everywhere we went they were selling Huckleberry jam, syrup, pies, tea, salad dressings and everything you could think of that you could have added a huckleberry to.  The milkshake was very yummy but we certainly didn't think it was yummy enough to get one everyday like the boys wanted to.

Nathan wanted some of our milkshake and Daddy said no.
